Helen and I talked about natural cosmetics, beauty routines, hair, and skincare products, and aromatherapy. The 35-year-old singer, content creator, and woman studying to be a family therapist shared with us her experience with the Nurme lemongrass product line, exciting thoughts about aromatherapy and living in harmony with nature, and many other interesting things. Read on for more details!

When did you first hear about Nurme and which product did You try first?

sidrunhein eeterlik õliI heard about Nurme for the first time somewhere 4-5 years ago when I came across Marilyn Jurman’s yoga studio and saw Nurme products there. I really trust the experience and recommendations of my friends, and so far I have not been disappointed. I saw that Marilyn liked Nurme products, and it was such a positive influence for me to see her using and being satisfied, and because the products smelled so good, I wanted to buy lemongrass products myself. My friend’s good experience with the products gave me the confidence that I can trust this brand.

The very first product that arrived at my home was lemongrass essential oil. I smelled it for the first time at Marilyn’s and the lemongrass smell was just so damn good. That’s how I went and ordered it for myself.

I must also mention that Nurme products are so affordable! At first, I had a feeling to wait and see, if this product can be as good as it is at such an affordable price… Now that I’ve tested them myself, I can say that it can. For me, Nurme is definitely one of the best recent discoveries, it exceeded my expectations in every way – body, nature, and wallet are pleased. That’s why I’m happy to loudly introduce Nurme products to everyone!

Where do you generally start when choosing your beauty products?

Apart from the recommendations of my friends and favorite content creators, I definitely select beauty products based on my own needs. I have taken the standpoint of buying only vegan and cruelty-free products as much as possible. This is one very important criterion for me when choosing products. Of course, products that are not 100% vegan also end up in my home, because I am human and not always perfect, but I have decided that I will only work with brands that are 100% cruelty-free.

aroomteraapiaSecondly, I really like intense scents, and I choose cosmetics based on that as well. Another interesting fact is that smell is a very important part of how memories are stored and plays a big role in the functioning of the nervous system. The way different scents work for me is that they take me back to memories. For example, the smell of Nurme lemongrass essential oil takes me back to Bali, which means that for my brain it’s like I’m in Bali and my body starts producing happy hormones. Which in turn means that my whole body chemistry is changing for the better, moving to a healthier place and going into better balance.

You mentioned that you really love essential oils. Tell me how and why you use them?

Here I want to briefly talk about trauma reactions and how aromatherapy can support us in this. Due to the fact that I am studying to be a family therapist, I have become very familiar with my own childhood traumas, which have left deep traces in me emotionally. We heal trauma by retraining our nervous system to not react to triggers and to realize that we are no longer in the moment where the traumatic event happened. One trick to healing trauma is doing aromatherapy when the trauma has been activated. At that point, you should smell a scent that you like and have on hand. The brain and nervous system cannot do two things at the same time – react to a threat (which is actually no longer a threat) and simultaneously focus on smelling a scent. Smell works by reconnecting with the new part of our brain and thereby calming the part of the brain that triggers the fight-flight mode that wants to react and panic when old trauma comes up. Aromatherapy is a very good trick for me, and I also use Nurme essential oils for this when I need to bring myself back to the present moment.

aroomteraapiaI usually use my essential oils in a diffuser. Sometimes I also put one drop on the pillow or next to the pillow at night, it also calms me down and I sleep better. I also very consciously choose cosmetic products that offer me similar aromatic pleasure. For example, my new favorite hair care products from Nurme and, also, my body lotion are now lemongrass-scented!

What do you expect from a good shampoo and how did Nurme hair care products affect your hair?

My hair is completely natural, I haven’t dyed or highlighted it in about 10 years, but it’s rather dry and needs deep hydration. What I expect from shampoo is that my hair stays clean for a long time and is moisturized after washing so that it doesn’t get frizzy. When it comes to conditioner, it’s important that it keeps my hair silky and soft. Nurme products met all these criteria and it was honestly a very big surprise. I’m always quite fussy and picky when it comes to shampoos and conditioners, and well, with natural products, it often happens that you’re not so satisfied with the result and quality. So for me, the biggest surprises from the lemongrass line were definitely the shampoo and conditioner.

I wash my hair 1-2 times a week and that’s completely enough, I don’t have greasy hair on the third day, plus my hair doesn’t get frizzy as much. I’ve been struggling with growing my hair for a year and a half and my hair was in such bad shape at one point. It was a result of both an emotional and physical health condition, I was sick a lot and had to take a lot of antibiotics and at one point it started ruining my hair. They became very fragile, therefore kinked and started to fall out.

Of course, other things also play a role in hair health: I consume collagen and biotin supplements, apply hair oil to the ends of my hair every other day, in the sauna I always put a towel on my head so that my hair does not get hot, and in the summer I use sun protection spray. I’ve actually been doing these things for a very long time, but I got rid of the frizz and achieved good shape only now when I started using Nurme products.

You also tried the lemongrass body lotion, how was your experience with it?

sidrunheina ihupiim looduslikI have rather normal skin, depending on the season and the moment it can be a little drier, but most of the time it doesn’t feel like I need to exfoliate and moisturize a lot. I really like the lemongrass body lotion because it absorbs very quickly. It is very easy to apply on the body and the body milk does not leave the skin sticky or greasy in any way, the skin is moisturized, but it doesn’t feel heavy on your body. I also use it to moisturize my hands, not just for my body.

In general, I still apply lotion after showering, it has become such a nice beauty ritual for me. When I have that weekly hair-washing moment, the whole bathroom smells so nice of lemongrass. I wash my body with lemongrass soap, hair with lemongrass shampoo and conditioner, and then I get out of the shower to moisturize myself with lemongrass body milk – well, it’s a complete pleasure and aromatherapy! I really love those days when I can just restart my day with this ritual.

Nurme loves nature and living in harmony with nature. How is your relationship with nature?

Living in harmony with nature is also my life motto. First of all, it is very important for me to be in nature every day. It fills the soul, reduces anxiety, and helps you get in better touch with yourself. The rhythms of nature are so important to me and help me live a higher quality and balanced life. According to Feng Shui, the morning starts at 3:00 am, day at 9:00 am, evening at 3:00 pm, and night at 9:00 pm. Of course, I don’t wake up at 3 o’clock, but I wake up around 5-7, I do yoga and meditate in the morning, and I can start the day with the rhythm of nature, that is before the day begins. By the way, the energy level is highest in the morning and slowly starts to decrease during the day. You can feel this energy level so well, until three o’clock I have a lot of energy and after that, it is more difficult to get anything done because the brain is already in another mode and I am much more tired. If I go to bed after 10 o’clock, I’m not as well-rested, my body is not as well recovered for the morning. 9:30 pm in the evening is one of the best times for me to crawl into bed and go to sleep.

nurme looduskosmeetikaFor me, nature and animals are a very important part of life. I can no longer imagine myself as far away from nature as I once was. I lived in Tallinn for 10 years and practically did not go for a walk in nature at all, it happened maybe once a year. My childhood was completely different – I grew up in the middle of nature and even ran in the pasture with sheep. Now I understand how important it is for me and how it affects me if I haven’t been in nature during the day or can’t go for a few days. In this case, I just have to create the feeling I get when I’m in nature through my fantasies, or relive some memories to feel good. Living in balance with nature is very important to me. I am sincerely glad to have collaboration partners who have the same vision and the same values as me. Like attracts like. 🙂
