Could I really have MASKNE!

Maskne aka mask-induced acne is mechanically induced acne caused by a combination of skin abrasion and excessive moisture. Medically, such a skin condition is called “acne mechanica”. The maskne is formed by wearing a face mask for a long time.

The heat and friction between the mask and the skin, plus the moisture and sweat from talking and breathing, unfortunately, provide a great habitat for a variety of villains such as different bacteria, viruses, and yeasts. As the skin’s natural protective barrier can be damaged by constant moisture, heat and abrasion, it is also significantly more sensitive to malignancies, which may lead to skin problems. The skin may become dry and red, or, vice versa oily, the pores may become clogged and inflammation may occur.

maskne How to prevent a maskne and where to find relief for it?

1) The first recommendation here is, of course, to wear the mask exactly as often as needed and as little as possible. In addition, it is very important to change the mask regularly. Ideally at least every 3 hours. However, if the mask gets wet or damp, it must be replaced immediately with a new dry one to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria. It is also worth making sure that the mask is not pressed too tightly against the skin and that the skin has some breathing space.

2) Secondly, it is very important to clean the skin regularly and thoroughly. For facial cleansing, the best are gentle cleansers that do not damage the skin or promote clogged pores. When choosing a cleanser, try to make the decision based on your skin type. We recommend using the rose facial foam or the deep cleansing facial soap bar for daily cleansing of makeup and dirt.

3) Third, try to keep your facial skin moisturized. In order to provide maximum protection for your delicate facial skin, it is a good idea to use a moisturizing face cream both before and after wearing the mask. The cream helps to form a protective barrier between your facial skin and the mask, thus saving the skin. Also, moisturize your lips with a vitamin-rich lip balm to prevent lips from drying out and cracking.

4) If possible, do not use make-up while wearing the mask, as the make-up layer under the mask can further promote clogging of the pores as well as skin problems (and acne).

5) If you have chosen a reusable face mask, wash the mask very carefully after each use. When washing the mask, be sure to prefer a cleanser designed for sensitive skin to avoid contact with toxic chemicals on your facial skin.

6) Use high-quality facial oils to cleanse and moisturize facial skin, which will help both prevent and alleviate skin problems. High-quality oils such as jojoba and tea tree are antibacterial and work wonders for problematic facial skin!
